Blog Tips: What Blonde Is Your Blog?

by BonsaiJon on March 9, 2009

This post is part of BonsaiJon.com’s blogging contest. If you like the post, be a sport and leave a comment to the author Asher Aw and help him win. I am sure he will appreciate it.

The chances of someone returning to a blog depends very much on two factors - the brains and beauty behind it. While any blog can be dressed up nicely with good design (which every blog should have), the brains in it will be a critical factor for any returning visitors.

There are 3 types of “blonde” that you can have so that you can attract returning visitors - the fun blonde, social blonde and the smart blonde. Without further ado, let’s dive right in.

The Fun Blonde

Blogs which are fun will naturally attract returning visitors because there are people who get on the internet to escape the humdrum of everyday life. If your blog is one which provides fun and entertainment, you’ll be sure to gain lots of visitors. One good example is icanhascheezburger.com where people can have fun with cats and various pets.

The Social Blonde

Being social simply means that going out into the other blogs and commenting on other people’s blogs to get to know them. When you do that on a consistent basis, people get to know about you and you will get them to visit your site simply because you keep visiting their blog and chatting with them by leaving comments.

Socializing is an important factor to have if you want your blog to have a life of it’s own - the social blonde loves to communicate and find out more about other people and would do it even if there are no clear benefits. Nevertheless, the rewards for being social is getting real and genuine responses on any blog post made.

The Smart Blonde

Intelligent life on the internet can be quite a commodity. Since most people on the internet tend to rant, rave, complain - finding people who can actually craft an intelligent and witty article will attract returning visitors to learn more. The internet is also somewhat like a huge encyclopedia - but people many people like to learn without being too formal. People also return constantly to learn from various blogs about their favourite topic of choice.

Now, that you’ve learnt about these 3 “blonde” factors - be sure to apply any of these factors in your own blog to get the return visitors!

Thanks for the post Asher.

My blog is more along the lines of being intelligent and social, I guess I could make it a bit more fun.

Intersting post. Every blog should be as versatile as possible, other wise it gets too boring, be interactive, be fun, be social, that’s what web2.0 is all about. That’s what humanity is about.

I love me a good post with a mix of humor and knowledge.

I have a feeling this post will go viral.

P.S. who’s the babe?

Hi Jon,
You’re welcome - glad you liked it! There’s no fixed way to get a really interactive blog but these are some rather simple ways to get started.

@John
Definitely true… I’m wondering what web3.0 is going to be :)

@Ryan Shamus
Let’s do hope that this post will go viral… but if you guys could do some stumbling or digging of it, that’ll help~ :D (I don’t know who’s the babe though. Gotta ask BonsaiJon)

For some reasons, I don’t like blonde. :p

Anyway, from what you have written, I think my blog is a social blonde but again, I don’t want it to be a blonde. :lol:

Stumbled! ;)

I think mine is a little bit of all of the above! LOL! wrong tactic, I am sure. contentmagician.com is a smart blonde wannabe and marshamaung.blogspot.com can’t decide which to be….a fun blonde or a social blonde. hee hee hee….

I have to admit, I’ve never thought about blogging in quite this way. My blog aims to be a smart blonde with a bit of fun and social blonde mixed in. On the Web Development Blog I offer advice, suggestions and how-to tips on a variety of Web related topics ranging from HTML and CSS to content development, SEO, marketing, social media and writing.

Naturally, over the years I have learned that you can enhance your reputation & increase traffic by joining discussions on other blogs, but that’s clearly more than a marketing tactic. In doing so I’ve met some great bloggers. While they do link to my site (when it is relevant to do so) they’ve also become great resources from who I can learn new ideas, and friends with whom I share discussions on Twitter, Facebook etc.

They also give me ideas for new topics, whether that comes in the form of a blog meme to which I can add my 2 cents or they post something about X on which I can follow up with more detail or with a different approach. As bloggers, the more we interact with each other, the more we can evolve our own blogs and serve the needs of our blogging readers—many of whom form the core of our reading audience.

Best wishes for the contest!

@Wayne Liew
Wow, thanks for the Stumble man! I’m sure Jon appreciates it (as do I!) Heh, I read somewhere before that “It’s fun to be blonde” so why not? Try dyeing your hair blonde, it could have some wonderous results!

@Marsha
Your sites are packed full of great quality content! Especially contentmagician.com. It looks to me that this is more of a talkative, intellectual blonde (ooh, more blogging material!) Heh. It’s great stuff~

@Heidi Cool
Thanks for the well wishes, Heidi! Yep, I totally agree with you - bloggers should interact more with each other so that we not only help others, we also evolve on our own blog! You’ve got some really cool insights, Heidi. Thanks for sharing!
