20 On Page SEO Factors To Sky-Rocket Your Rankings Part 3 of 4

by BonsaiJon on February 4, 2009

This post is Part 3 of a 4 Post Series. It is a continuation of:

Suggestion: Get the most of your learning experience by reading Part 1 and Part 2of the series if you haven’t read them yet.

  1. Create a Robots.txt file

The robots.txt file is a form of communication between visiting robots (spiders) that index the content of your web site pages. Every search engine has a spider, Google has one and so do Yahoo!, Msn and Ask.  It is a program that visits your website and takes information to be analyzed later by the search engines.  For those spiders that obey the file, it provides a map for what they can, and cannot index. The robots.txt file resides in your root directory, for instance mine is at http://BonsaiJon.com/robots.txt

In this file you can tell the spiders not to index certain files or directories.  Without it spiders will crawl every page found, even those you don’t want including your private login directory, image, css and javascript files etc.  This may expose folders you don’t want to be seen publicly and take unnecessary bandwith.

You can read a tutorial on Optimizing Robots.txt file for SEO.

  2. Hosting

Don’t be cheap,  choose a good hosting provider.  There are hundreds of website who offer unlimited space for $9 and this may be good to start off with and minimize cost, however if you want good rankings and astound reputation get a decent server.   These kind of websites will host hundreds and sometimes thousands of websites on the same server and IP Address.  If there are spam sites, they might get black listed and if Google blacklists the entire server than guess what? You can say bye bye to your chance of ranking or maybe not even getting indexed.

One obvious reason to get a decent hosting is speed.  Your users will not enjoy a slow loading website. If it takes more than 5 seconds to load, they might even bounce.  Google doesn’t like slow websites either and you may be penalized.

Also avoid having your blog or website hosted publicly like Wordpress.com and Blogger.com.  I am not saying the service is bad, however it is NOT YOUR blog. You manage it, but on any given day they can decide to stop the service.

  3. Optimize Your Images

First off let me start by saying that Search Engine Spiders DO NOT see images.  They see only text, however we can also optimize our images for seo.

    • Size Does Matter - Make sure that your images are not too large so forget about using images from your camera.  All images should be 200Kb or smaller.  Preferably images should be between 1K and 35K.  Use them according to your needs, if you have a thumbnail for your image, do not use the large image and resize it through html code
    • Quantity - Avoid having your site bloated with a lot of images, like with any other tool in your arsenal, use them wisely.  Avoid having images for your menu or your title tags.
    • Use Alt and Title Tags- Alt and Title tags say what the image is about, and when an image is used as a link you can consider them as anchor text.

Let me make this clear, Images Do Not have any Seo Value, so it’s useless trying to stuff keywords in your Alt Tag and  Links From Images Do Not pass link juice/authority/Page Rank

  4. Site age

Web sites are like wine, the older they are he idea the better for SEO they get. The idea is that an old, established site is more trustworthy (they have been around and are here to stay) than a new site that has just poped up and might be spam and soon disappear. There is not much you can do about this except wait and buy your domain for more than 2 years of more.  Again don’t be cheap a domain costs $8, it does you no harm for buying a domain for 3 years, you’ll be protecting your brand.

  5. Be Certain that All Links Are Valid

You will be penalized if your site is not linked properly.  Too many dead links will not look good to your visitors and neither will it to bots, they don’t like wasting time and resources.  If you have Google Webmaster Tools (which you should) you will notice that Google starts complaining if it notices dead links. The larger a website gets, the harder it is to know if there are dead links, especially if you are linking externally.

I like to use Xenu Link Sleuth.  It looks a bit crude but it gets the job done.

Although I agree with you that images have no SEO value whatsoever (its the ALT tags that matter), I don’t really agree with this policy.

Google speaks about developing websites for people and not for search engines, yet we all know that a page with 500 words text is not the same as a page with 500 words text plus a few photos/graphics.

Furthermore, we have recently seen Google promoting video as a mode of communication and are continuously looking at ways to help sites with video resources. Why are text and video privileged whilst images aren’t?

Its true that spiders cannot interpret images on their own, but then again, why doesn’t Google implement a policy in which having a number of images/1000 words for instance, would help SEO. Not having images wouldn’t hurt your site, it just wouldn’t help it either.

What do you guys think?

Hi Jeffrey,

I agree with your point that Google gives more importance to videos than images, however we must try to understand it from their side. Google focuses a lot on the “Intent” of the element on the page. A Video’s intent is to be watched, that’s easy. An image has a lot of different intents, it could be Navigational (menu buttons), Promotional (banners/ads), Informational etc.

A banner could show an image of 2 loved ones hugging each other with it’s alt text saying “Make Your Loved One Happy Forever” while linking to a page wanting you to enlarge your ‘package’.

Also notice that the videos that rank in SERPs are rarely located the same server as the website. It’s usually on an established and reputable website YouTube, VodPod, TED etc and all these sites have meta data that compliment the video.

One last point is Google do index images for Google Images however this doesn’t help you commercially that much, unless you are a stock photography website. Let’s take this scenario as an example. You have a site that sells golf balls, if users are browsing images for “Golf Balls” they just want your image, it is very unlikely that you are going to sell a set of golf balls for that search.

Like you said, we build websites for people. With good SEO Google sends us people, they make the rules, we just try to figure them about play by them. Fair Trade.

I disagree with your comments regarding blogs Jon, when you mention WP and Blogger, you must keep in mind that Blogger is owned by Google itself, and that Google tends to favor such sites when it comes to ranking. No-one would ever imagine Blogger or WP quitting the scene in my opinion! I think that a blog hosted on such platforms is an easier entry vehicle to search engine rankings other than any other newly hosted blog on one’s personal site!

It’s an excellent point you made Bryan.

You can also argue that there are people like Seth Godin, who has his blog on Typepad, but how many people have the marketing skills and user base that Seth Godin has? The guy’s a genius.

Let me ask you this. If a client came to you to build a website for him would you recommend Blogger.com or Wordpress.com or would you recommend him buying his own domain and hosting? Which will give you a stronger Brand your own domain or a sub-domain on another blog?

I am not saying don’t use these blogs, because they can be used well for link building and such (which is beyond the scope of these 5 factors above since that’s Off Page SEO) however Do NOT base your brand on them. It’s like using Hotmail or your ISP’s e-mail to conduct business, you just don’t do it.

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Chris Rock said it best, “You can drive a car with your feet if you want too, it doesn’t make it a good f***kin idea”

Last time I had a blog on Wordpress I couldn’t put any ads where I wanted in the template, I know this can be done on blogger. I couldn’t use No Follow Links where I wanted and other small restrictions like this.

Rhetorical Question: How easy is it to Stand Out and be Remarkable on Wordpress or Blogger?

Agenda Book Store and Papillon (Maltese Businesses) have branched out in Airports, Hospitals, University etc but they started and grew their businesses from their own shops first.

So to close this off before I go on a tangent, you should decide where you want your blog to go before choosing where and how you should host it. Having your blog on another domain is like having a shop at a supermarket. Sure you will get visitors, but you must play by the supermarket’s rules and constraints. If the supermarket goes out of business, then you’re out of business. It doesn’t mean it won’t be profitable, there’s a certain amount of risk either way.

The power of decision is in your hands …. choose wisely.

This is one of those arguments that will rage for ages to come!

In my view the most important thing to do is to decide what you want to do with your blog.

Wordpress.com and blogger both have their strengths and weaknesses and, of course, you can use them both - which is what I do.

I wrote a post on this a while ago:

Hope it’s helpful.

Cheers,

Martin.

Other factors that will bring your sites to the top of search engine is more backlink from high PR websites. With more backlink automaticaly drive more visitors to your website from major search engine like google, msn, yahoo, etc.

Of course it is and a very important part of SEO. This post is about On-Page SEO though and link building is part of Off-Site SEO. There will be a Guide about Off-Page SEO and it will definitely include Link Building so make sure you check it out and let me know your thoughts.
